Paws in the Park

What is Paws in the Park?
Paws in the Park and Walk for the Animals is an all-day event featuring a fun walk, games, food, live music and activities for pets and their families. There will be local animal experts and our own veterinarians on hand to answer questions related to animal health, a variety of educational exhibits with animals of all kinds, vendors from all around the lowcountry, and lots of treats for animals and their owners. This one day festival will raise money to save countless animals lives, help feed and provide medical care for hundreds of animals, provide a day for education and family togetherness, and bring the community together toward a common cause.

The mission of the Charleston Animal Society is to ensure that every domestic animal in our community lives in an environment that provides protection, love, activity and nourishment. As a primary advocate and humane education resource, the CAS offers programs in Charleston and surrounding area schools and in the community, teaching lessons that foster kindness to people, animals and the earth.

In addition, the Charleston Animal Society provides shelter and care for lost, abandoned and homeless companion animals; maintains a state-of-the-art facility that promotes the adoption of homeless animals to responsible, caring homes; operates a low fee spay/neuter clinic; works collaboratively with other local animal shelters and rescue groups; works with animal control agencies on cruelty investigations and seeks vigorous prosecution when appropriate.

The Charleston Animal Society provides food, shelter, medical care, and compassion to more than 12,000 homeless animals each year. Thanks to the gifts of our donors and corporate partners, last year we were able to place over 5,450 of our animal friends in a new home or reunite them with their owner, spay/neuter over 6,000 animals, and provide rescue efforts for animals suffering from cruelty situations. We are also able to provide humane education to 2,800 students in area classrooms each year. Through these programs we teach children empathy and compassion for animals and people. S2000 Last Edition

Japanese car manufacturer Honda recently disclosed that it will be the end of the line for the Honda S2000 sports car after the production of the 2009 variant.The S2000 was introduced to the market in 1999 but was marketed as a 2000 model. The S2000 was a hit with car enthusiasts who enjoyed its effective manual transmission and its cool chassis work. Top Gear star Jeremy Clarkson was reported being a huge fan of the S2000, and the car always did great in their annual car surveys! The first release of the Honda sports car was designed to pay homage to the company’s 50th anniversary. The S2000 was well received by consumers that the Japanese car manufacturer decided to produce the car..The 2000 on its tag was coined from the 2000 cc engine that had an output of 240 horsepower. During that time, the horsepower per liter ratio of 123.5 was record breaking and was considered as very efficient.Revisions were very minor to the next releases of the S2000 through the years. The 2004 released received a facelift with cosmetics to the body panels and reconfigured suspension system to decrease the potential oversteering. In 2007 the Club Racer S2000 variant was released and featured a removable hardtop. Its suspension was specifically designed to provide a smooth ride on the track.

Hendrick Honda of Charleston is proud to welcome Brian Mullinax to the Hendrick Family. Originally from Mt. Pleasant, SC Brian has had many years of sales experience to include automobiles. He started in the car business back in 1990's at Pete Olmstead Pontiac, GMC Porsche. Then, like so many in the LowCountry Brian began selling Real Estate. He was On Site Sales with Centex Homes and then GTS Development for over 10 Years. Brian and his wife of 5 years Zuhal (from Samsun, Turkey) reside in Mt. Pleasant.

Patience pays off for the automaker as it thrives in hard times.

In May, the thrifty Honda Civic became the best-selling vehicle in America.

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- Given what he has been through in the past several weeks, it is not surprising that General Motors chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner enjoys a bit of schadenfreude at the expense of his Asian rivals.

So while taping an interview with CNNMoney.com last week, Wagoner mischievously tossed barbs at Toyota (TM) for the dubious distinction of being the latest automaker to open a pickup truck plant in North America - only to see truck sales squeezed by the twin pincers of an economic downturn and skyrocketing gasoline prices.

Wagoner was more restrained in his comments about Honda (HMC), however. Japan's second-largest car company makes no body-on-frame pickups, nor any V-8 engines to power them, and so is riding out the current market turmoil with extraordinary ease. Wagoner praised Honda for its thoroughness and consistency in focusing on small, highly-efficient cars and engines.
He might have added "prescience." All but alone among the world's automakers, Honda has long behaved as if the world is indeed running out of all kinds of resources, including oil. Its relentless focus on thrift and conservation, which seemed like eccentricities 20 or 30 years ago, today make Honda the leader of the environmental pack.

At a time when Americans are hyper-conscious about gas prices -- and how can they not be with the media pounding home the message every day - that kind of prescience is paying off for Honda in a big way.

So while the Detroit Three plus Toyota were getting hammered on the showroom floor in May, with sales down anywhere from 4.3% for Toyota to 27.5% for General Motors (GM, Fortune 500), Honda posed a stunning 15.6% sales increase. That was enough to vault it ahead of Chrysler for the month and put it in fourth place in North American sales.

Adding injury to insult, the Honda Civic became the best selling vehicle in America - car or truck - and both it and the Honda Accord outsold the once-invincible Ford F-150 pickup trucks.
Rocket science this isn't. They aren't making any more oil so, over time, you had to figure it was going to get more expensive and more scarce. So why weren't other manufacturers able to see the road ahead as well as Honda?

1. They got sidetracked by the easy profits available in big SUVs and pickups. During the 1990s, the last golden age of the American auto industry, the combination of cheap gas and high-profit big vehicles seduced automakers into believing the good times would never end. Then, when the clock started to run down in 2004, the domestics were too hooked on the big money, and too inflexible by virtue of their UAW contracts, to quickly make changes. Toyota and Nissan (NSANY), anxious for their own bite out of the golden apple, got sucked in too, ramping up pickup production at just the wrong time.

2. Honda's tightly-knit corporate culture and long time horizon made it uniquely able to wait for events to move in its direction, rather than chasing fluctuations in the marketplace. While the car-based Ridgeline truck was savaged by critics for not being a "true" pickup, it now looks like smart move in an era of $4 a gallon gasoline.

3. The other automakers became distracted by their own corporate imperatives. Nissan compounded its problems by starting its own passenger car horsepower race. The Detroit Three, at times, seemed to get their jollies by reviving models from 40 years ago -- Mustang, Challenger, Camaro -- because of the short term jolt they got in the marketplace, rather than formulating any kind of long-term strategy for a resource-constrained world. And who can explain GM's infatuation with Hummers long after the brand ceased to resonate in the marketplace?

The way things area going, don't be surprised to see Honda edge ahead of Ford (F, Fortune 500) into third place in the U.S. market (behind GM and Toyota). It won't happen because of any strenuous sales efforts - it will be another case of the world coming to Honda, rather than the other way around.

A Satisfied Out-of-Town Service Customer

Dear Mr. Sauls,

On February 1st, I was on my way with my 13 year old son from Atlanta to Charleston for his Southeastern Golf Tournament. About 20 miles outside of Charleston, my right rear (tire) went flat on my Acura RL. I called Acura and they gave me directions to the Acura dealer in Charleston. the Acura dealer suggested Tire Kingdom and Hendrick Honda of Charleston for fixing these types of tires since they were the only two dealers in town with a PAX machine. I went to Tire Kingdom and their machine has been out of order for months. I then drove down the street to Hendrick Honda. I was greeted by Darrell Hixson and Kevin Mink. They arranged a rental car and told me they would be back to me in two hours. Unfortunately the tire was not fixable. I then proceeded to call Nalley Acura in Atlanta and several other Acura dealers and no one would cooperate in finding me a replacement tire. The earliest I was going to be able to get a tire would be Monday which would have cost me a day of work and my son being out of school for another day. Kevin and Darrell worked behind the scenes and found a tire in Ohio and arranged for it to FedEx to your dealership on Saturday. They really went beyond the call of duty to help me out when my own dealer and manufacturer could not come through even though this is the 5th Acura I have purchased from them in the past 3 years. I just want to take this opportunity to thank you and your dealership for having such a first class service department with leadership and work effort that is second to none. My weekend with my son and the time we spent in Charleston would have been disappointing if it wasn't for the effort of Kevin and Darrell.
