Kelly Bires to drive #88 Chevrolet in Nationwide Series Race

Hendrick Motorsports teammates Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. secured the front row for the Daytona 500 on Saturday.

Martin, the only driver to top 191 mph during qualifying, earned his first Daytona 500 pole. Earnhardt will start second, trying to rebound from the worst season in his Sprint Cup career.

The front-row sweep validates, at least for a week, the offseason moves team owner Rick Hendrick made in an attempt to get Earnhardt's team turned around.

"It's such an incredible accomplishment for the 5 and 88 team," Martin said. "It's all about the team. That was not an accomplishment of mine. ... To have Dale Jr. on the outside of the front row, locked in, just means we're doing something right."

Earnhardt was nearly as optimistic.

"This is a start, and hopefully we can keep the ball rolling over the next several days and have a good Speedweeks," Earnhardt said.

Martin and Earnhardt are the only drivers in the 43-man field who have their starting positions locked in.

The top 35 drivers from last season are guaranteed starting spots in next Sunday's race, but their positions will be set in Thursday's 150-mile qualifying races. Eight other spots will be up for grabs in those races, which could be wild affairs since NASCAR is giving drivers more horsepower and more leeway for aggressive driving.

Martin and Earnhardt, meanwhile, might just want to stay out of trouble.

Hendrick Motorsports, the most successful team in NASCAR right now, spent the offseason trying to get Earnhardt more in line with teammates Jimmie Johnson, Martin and Jeff Gordon -- who swept the top three spots in the final standings last season.

Earnhardt, the sport's most popular driver, went winless in his No. 88 Chevrolet. He notched just five top-10 finishes, had his crew chief fired midway through the year and suffered through the most confidence-rattling season of his 10-year Cup career.

After celebrating Johnson's fourth consecutive Sprint Cup championship, Hendrick made getting Earnhardt's team turned around his top priority. He restructured shop practices and shifted a lead race engineer and a key mechanic from Martin's successful team to Earnhardt's struggling crew.

Whether the moves pay off won't really be known for some time, but for at least a week, it looks like Hendrick pushed all the right buttons.

"It takes a little bit of the pressure off and relieves a little bit of the stress," Earnhardt said.

The all-new 2011 Honda CR-Z sport hybrid coupe, making its U.S. production debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, introduces sleek styling and sporty handling to the hybrid segment, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

Set to go on sale late summer in the U.S., the CR-Z is powered by a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine with Honda's compact and lightweight Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid-electric system. The two-passenger CR-Z introduces a new three-mode drive system that allows the driver to select between Sport, Econ (Economy) and Normal driving modes.

The two trim levels include the well-equipped CR-Z and the feature-rich CR-Z EX. A six-speed manual transmission is standard equipment and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available. Standard features on the CR-Z include Vehicle Stability Assist, an AM/FM/CD/USB audio system with six speakers, automatic climate control, power windows and door locks, remote entry, cruise control, and more. The CR-Z represents the sixth unique version of Honda's original IMA technology since the launch of the 2000 Insight, the first hybrid vehicle available in North America in December 1999. The foundation of the CR-Z's hybrid powertrain is a 4-cylinder, 16-valve, single overhead cam engine with "intelligent" Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) that receives additional power from the IMA system's DC brushless electric motor. The i-VTEC system controls the opening and closing of one intake valve per cylinder to enhance combustion at low RPMs. The 10-kilowatt electric motor assists in acceleration and also acts as a generator during braking or coasting to capture kinetic energy that recharges the 100-volt IMA nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Honda Leads in Fuel Efficiency

Honda Motor Co. has the most fuel efficient fleet in the United States, followed closely by Hyundai Motor Co., the Environmental Protection Agency said Friday in releasing preliminary figures for 2009. According to the Detroit News, all vehicles sold in the 2009 model year are expected to average 21.1 miles per gallon in "real world" driving, which is one-tenth of a mile better than in the 2008 model year. Final 2009 figures will be released next year in October or November. The preliminary numbers are based on sales data and confidential product reports and sales estimates from the companies and usually don't vary much from the final tallies, which are based on actual sales. Honda had a fleet wide 23.6 MPG fuel economy average in the 2009 model year. Hyundai had 23.4 MPG. Toyota Motor Corp., which was tied for first in 2007, slipped to third with 23.2 MPG. Volkswagen AG was fourth at 22.3 MPG; while Nissan Motor Co. and BMW AG were tied for fifth at 21.6 MPG. The EPA reports "real world" fuel economy rankings and carbon emissions. Because of credits for building alternative fueled vehicles, real-world adjustments and testing procedures, the EPA figures are at least 25 percent lower than those on new vehicle stickers. Black Friday: Best day to buy a car

If you're looking for a new car, the day after Thanksgiving is the best day of the year to buy.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- When people think of Black Friday shopping, they usually think of things like flat screen TVs, toys and sweaters. Now you can add cars, trucks and SUVs.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is the best day to buy a car, according to car pricing researchers at the Web site Truecar.com.

Analysts looked at day-by-day car pricing for the last several years. That data revealed that discounts on Black Friday are, on average, the biggest of the year.

"The discounts from dealerships, as well as manufacturers' incentives, generate the highest discounts of the year on Black Friday," said Jesse Toprak, an analyst for Truecar.com.

Unlike typical Black Friday sales where customers know exactly what they'll pay for an item, car prices are individually negotiated the day of the sale, so it's difficult for customers to know ahead of time they'll be getting a deal. But there's been a clear trend, Toprak said.

The average new car discount on Nov. 27 is projected to be 7.5%. The average discount the day before and after is expected to be just over 6%. On a typical day throughout the year, car shoppers usually pay about 4.7% less than the sticker price.

Truecar.com projected particularly large Black Friday discounts on certain models. For instance, consumers should be able to pay about 28% off sticker price for a 2009 Suzuki SX4 compact car, 26% off for a 2009 Nissan Titan or Ford F-150 pick-up or 20% off a 2009 Hyundai Sonata sedan.

Getting in on the Black Friday madness...

Car dealers are trying to get a piece of the Black Friday shopping frenzy, Toprak theorized, and that may to lead to the bigger discounts found in the data.

"There's a lot of noise in the market that day, and we have to stand out," agreed Brian Benstock, general manager of New York City's Paragon Honda.

Paragon Honda will send bicycle riders dressed in gorilla costumes to a nearby Best Buy store, Benstock said. The gorillas will be draped in sandwich-board signs advertising car deals available just down the road.

Paragon Honda will also be relying on more traditional advertising methods to pull customers in, Benstock said, including TV and print ads touting a "$5-a-day" Honda Civic. (That's a $149 a month for a 30-month lease with $1,999 down.)

Michelle Primm, managing partner of Cascade Auto Group in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, said her dealerships don't usually do big, splashy ads, except on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. "Those are the only two days when we buy full-page ads in the paper," she said.

Primm says her dealership does get more business on Black Friday although according to Truecar.com's Toprak, average dealership traffic doesn't tend to be particularly high that day, said Toprak. "Dealerships always spend a lot of money on marketing for that day," said Toprak "but for some reason it's not a particularly big day for car shopping."

That may be part of the reason for extra-big discounts, Toprak theorized. Dealerships that aren't getting the business just keep trying harder. Not everyone is playing, though. Bob Goldberg, general manager of Premium Nissan in New Rochelle, NY, denied that Black Friday is particularly special at his dealership. "Every day is important to us," he said. "I don't consider it different from any other day."

Crunch time for car dealers...

Adding to the sales pressure, Black Friday this year happens to fall very close to the end of the month. Car deals typically sweeten as the month goes on because many dealerships are approaching quotas they must meet in order to get additional manufacturer incentives.

"I mean the push is on as we get close to the end of the month," Nissan dealer Goldberg conceded. Besides monthly deadlines, dealers are also under pressure to clear out 2009 model year cars and trucks before the end of the calendar year. Those cars will be much harder to sell after Dec. 31, when they become "last year's" models.

What is Paws in the Park?
Paws in the Park and Walk for the Animals is an all-day event featuring a fun walk, games, food, live music and activities for pets and their families. There will be local animal experts and our own veterinarians on hand to answer questions related to animal health, a variety of educational exhibits with animals of all kinds, vendors from all around the lowcountry, and lots of treats for animals and their owners. This one day festival will raise money to save countless animals lives, help feed and provide medical care for hundreds of animals, provide a day for education and family togetherness, and bring the community together toward a common cause.

The mission of the Charleston Animal Society is to ensure that every domestic animal in our community lives in an environment that provides protection, love, activity and nourishment. As a primary advocate and humane education resource, the CAS offers programs in Charleston and surrounding area schools and in the community, teaching lessons that foster kindness to people, animals and the earth.

In addition, the Charleston Animal Society provides shelter and care for lost, abandoned and homeless companion animals; maintains a state-of-the-art facility that promotes the adoption of homeless animals to responsible, caring homes; operates a low fee spay/neuter clinic; works collaboratively with other local animal shelters and rescue groups; works with animal control agencies on cruelty investigations and seeks vigorous prosecution when appropriate.

Take advantage of the CAR Allowance Rebate System (CARS), a federal program that helps the consumers buy or lease a more environmentally-friendly vehicle from dealers when they trade in a less fuel-efficient car or truck. The CARS is basically a $1 billion government program through which the consumers can get a $3,500 or $4,500 discount from the dealer when they trade in their old vehicle and buy or lease a new one. One main plus point of the program is that the consumers do not have to register anywhere or at any time for this program. Here are a few important points to keep in mind to utilize the benefits of this program.

Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date

Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify

Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)

Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in

The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate

Last but not the least, the CARS program runs through November 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first
